Opatija is a town in western Croatia, just southwest of Rijeka on the Adriatic coast. The city is geographically on the Istrianpeninsula, though it is not in Istria county, but Primorje-Gorski Kotar county.
Tourist resortThe whole sea-coast to the north and south of Opatija is rocky and picturesque, and contains several smaller winter resorts. There is a 12 km-long promenade along the entire riviera, the Lungomarefrom Volosko, via Opatija, to Lovran. After Dubrovnik, Opatija is form many years the second most popular place in the Adriatic for tourists.

SightsThe central church in Šibenik, the Cathedral of St. James, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Several successive architects built it completely in stone between 1431 and 1536,both in Gothic and in Renaissance style. The interlocking stone slabs of the Cathedral's roof were damaged when the city was shelled by Serbian forces in 1991. The damage has since been repaired. Šibenik is also called "Krešimirov grad" (Krešimir's city) because croatian King Petar Krešimir lived in this city.

The triangular fortress of the Old Town from the 16th century, well-preserved and turned into the Native Museum, is the main destination of every tourist. The fortress is famous for the victory of the joint forces of Croats and Carniolans (Slovenes) over the Turks in 1593, known as the Battle of Sisak.
