Buje is a town situated in Istria, Croatia´s westernmost peninsula in Istarska. Buje was known as the "sentinel of Istria" for its hilltop site located 10 km inland from the Adriatic sea. It still commands an excellent panorama. Buja is closed to Novigrad.
HistoryBuje has a rich history; traces of life in the region date back to prehistoric times. The town developed from a Roman and Venetian settlement into a medieval town. A baroque church from the 16th century, built on the foundations of a Roman temple dominates the square.

SightsBesides the river Karišnica flows through Gornji Karin also stream Bijela Rijeka (White River). According to some reports, in Roman times there was building of an amphitheater for holding gladiatorial games. In Gornji Karin and surroundings there are several sights. One of them is a river Kraka canyon and waterfalls of Bijela Rijeka, as well as the Franciscan monastery, a natural mud and National Park.

The city is best known for its many surviving ancient Roman buildings, the most famous of which is its 1st century amphitheatre, which is among the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world. The city has a long tradition of winemaking, fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism.
