Rijeka is the principal seaport and the third largest city in Croatia. Historically, because of its strategic position and its excellent deep-water Port of Rijeka, the city was fiercely contested, especially between Italy, Hungary, and Croatia, changing hands and demographics many times over centuries.

According to some reports, in Roman times there was building of an amphitheater for holding gladiatorial games. In Gornji Karin and surroundings there are several sights. One of them is a river Kraka canyon and waterfalls of Bijela Rijeka, as well as the Franciscan monastery, a natural mud and National Park.
